The most effective addiction treatment program provides effective therapy in a setting that is best suited to help you achieve your goals. When starting rehab, everyone has different treatment needs. Some people may require an intensive, heavily structured treatment program, whereas others may achieve the same results in a more flexible environment. If you are ready to go to rehab and have started researching programs near you, it is possible you have come across several different types of treatment. These differing program types or levels of care vary in structure and intensity. Common examples of different care levels include residential or inpatient programs, outpatient programs, intensive outpatient programs, and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs or day programs).
Although some people find residential or inpatient care to be the most beneficial for their specific needs, the intensity of an inpatient program might be more than necessary to achieve sobriety or prevent a person from fulfilling their obligations at work or school. In these cases, a day treatment program (or a partial hospitalization program) might offer effective addiction and mental health treatment without the residential requirement of an inpatient program.
Day treatment is a partial hospitalization program for those individuals with mental, emotional, and/or addictive disorders who do not require twenty-four-hour inpatient care. We provide an intensive course of treatment, where the individual spends at least 8 hours during the day at our facility. Along with treatment, our day treatment programs in Utah will provide an educational component. The hours may be flexible, depending on the center and individual.
The cost is lower than inpatient treatment which can be ideal for certain individuals. Day treatment is ideal for those with chronic disorders, or for those who have a severe addiction and relapse history who have already spent thirty days or more in an inpatient drug treatment center. It eases the transition from residential back to one’s life. Day Treatment is a good choice for those who do not need to medically detox.
If your home environment is stable, clean, and sober, day treatment may be a good option. In general, day treatment provides all the essential tools and amenities that our inpatient facility provides, with the benefit of lower cost, and going home at night. Be sure to check your insurance policy, as our day treatment programs in Utah may be covered fully or partially.
Day treatment programs provide an opportunity to seek help to overcome addiction and mental health struggles in an intensive setting similar to that found in an inpatient or residential program. However, the critical difference between a day program and an intensive outpatient program is that day programs do not require an overnight stay at the rehab. Day programs are also referred to as partial hospitalization programs, which can be confusing to some. In general, there is not a “hospitalization” component to a day treatment program.
Day programs like ours at Spirit Mountain Recovery in Utah provide the same wide range of comprehensive, evidence-based treatment options you would receive at our residential rehab programs. Our day program includes proven and trusted therapy models, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), along with many alternative treatment models designed to ensure the most well-rounded and effective treatment program possible. The goal of our day program is to ensure you receive the care and support you need to heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Similar to choosing an inpatient care program, the first step in our day treatment program is an assessment. You will work directly with members of the care team to determine the best therapy models to address your specific care needs. Each of our therapeutic models is proven to help patients overcome addiction and mental health struggles by discovering the stressors and challenges that lie at the roots of these problems. Understanding more about what leads to painful mental health symptoms or ongoing struggles with substance abuse makes it possible to develop healthier and safer ways to manage triggers without self-medicating with drugs or alcohol.

Day treatment programs are less intensive than a residential program, yet more so than an intensive outpatient program. Many people question what the differences are between a day treatment program and an intensive outpatient program. Both intensive outpatient treatment programs and day treatment programs allow you to get the help you need to heal without leaving home or sacrificing vital day-to-day obligations to do so. Also, both day programs and intensive outpatient programs provide access to intensive therapy. The difference between the two programs is the intensity of treatment. A day program is generally more intensive than an intensive outpatient program.
When you choose a day program, you can expect to engage in therapy on a more frequent basis than you would at a lower level of care. Most day programs require more counseling sessions and more significant time spent engaging in treatment each week. Most day programs schedule therapy at a similar frequency to that found in a residential program. Most day treatment programs require an average of five sessions each week, with each session ranging from four to eight hours depending on the design of your specific treatment plan.
It is important to note that day treatment programs may not be the best option for every person. While they are an excellent option for someone who has recently completed an inpatient treatment program or someone with mild to moderate treatment needs, a day treatment program may not be the best option for those with severe addictions or significant withdrawal symptoms.
When you choose our day treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction treatment, you will work with a member of our treatment team to determine the best course of treatment to help you heal. For some, the first step in treatment is detox. Fully recovering from addiction requires allowing your body the time it needs to rid itself of the effects and dependency on toxic substances before engaging in therapy. If you still struggle with cravings to use or drink, it will be impossible to fully immerse yourself in a therapy program. Successful detox ensures a greater opportunity for positive outcomes from therapy.
At our day treatment program in Utah, the team at Spirit Mountain Recovery will guide you through each step of your recovery journey. As part of your individually designed therapy program, you will participate in addiction treatment therapy sessions up to five times per week. At a day program, therapy sessions last between five and eight hours each day. The duration of therapy sessions in a day program is part of what sets day treatment apart from traditional outpatient programs where one might attend therapy between eight and ten (total) hours each week.
At a day program, patients generally attend a combination of therapy sessions, including individual, group, and family therapy up to 40 hours per week. In addition to therapy sessions involving evidence-based treatments, our day program provides peer support sessions (such as 12-step programs) and several alternative therapy options. Our goal is to ensure our day treatment program offers a broad range of therapeutic options designed to help you leave treatment with the tools and relapse prevention skills you need to prevent future relapse.
Overcoming addiction is not a one-step process. Although completing an addiction treatment program (of any level of care) is a vital first step towards lasting recovery, it is not the last piece of the recovery puzzle. Many people who enter treatment for addiction or a dual diagnosis will work for many months or years to achieve lasting sobriety and wellness. It is not uncommon to experience challenges to your sobriety or setbacks as you continue your recovery journey. In fact, more than half of those who complete an addiction treatment program will experience a relapse at least once after completing treatment.
At Spirit Mountain Recovery’s day treatment program, we understand that the most successful treatment programs are those that consider your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Participating in a therapy program based on evidence-based practices is vital to helping you learn and practice the skills you need to transition from therapy to a successful future without drugs or alcohol. We strive to provide comprehensive relapse prevention education, medication management, and holistic treatment approaches at our day program.
