Know Your Coverage
TRICARE is an insurance program specifically for active duty service members and their family members. TRICARE is also available to members of the National Guard and Reserve, their family members, retired military personnel and their family, survivors, and certain others. TRICARE helps to connect the vast resources of the Military Health System (including military hospitals and clinics) with the broad network of civilian health care professionals, pharmacies, and institutions. Linking the tremendous network of providers from both military and civilian operations ensures one of the largest networks of in-network care possible for those connected to military service.
The office of service personnel helps determine your eligibility for TRICARE benefits. Typical examples of those who would generally be considered eligible for TRICARE include all of the above listed active and former military personnel as well as retired reserve members and families, children of active and retired service members, former spouses, Medal of Honor recipients, and their families, dependent parents and foreign force members and their families. The best way to determine eligibility for TRICARE benefits is to contact your personnel office.
Military affiliated with TRICARE insurance can get care in hundreds of locations around the world. The Military Health System, or MHS, is an integrated healthcare system. It is possible to find care linked to the Military Health System at a military hospital or clinics, a civilian hospital or clinic, a civilian provider, or other TRICARE-authorized non-network providers. There are several TRICARE authorized providers throughout the civilian network. However, it is important to mention that the authorized network depends on your region. Before choosing a provider, you must research your region to determine if they are considered in-network or non-network. While it is possible to seek care at a non-network TRICARE authorized provider, your level of coverage will vary depending on your specific TRICARE plan, and you may have higher out-of-pocket expenses.
TRICARE offers several plans with varying levels of care and coverage. The type of TRICARE plan you can choose depends on your current military affiliation. As with other insurance plans provided by non-military affiliated organizations, the cost of your TRICARE plan varies depending on the type of plan and the type of care you need. TRICARE offers prescription drug coverage, dental and vision coverage, including annual eye exams, in addition to traditional medical coverage.
The Pros of Intensive Outpatient
Veterans of military service and current active service personnel are at an increased risk for substance abuse and mental health struggles. There are many underlying reasons for this, including trauma, stressors, military culture, etc. It is not uncommon for servicemen and women to develop substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain conditions, and other mental or physical health challenges.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) suggests up to 11% of veterans who visit a medical facility linked to the VA for the first time meet the diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder. Data on drug and alcohol addiction for veterans suggest more than 80% of veterans abuse alcohol, and more than 25% abuse illegal drugs. Up to 7% of veterans struggle with polysubstance abuse, using both alcohol and illicit drugs. Veterans experience alcoholism at nearly twice the rate of civilians. Also, veterans are at a greater risk for co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis conditions. Veterans with a substance use disorder are three to four times more likely to have post-traumatic stress disorder or depression.
Military affiliated with TriCare insurance can use their benefits for several types of addiction and mental health care. Depending on your plan and level of coverage, TRICARE may cover inpatient (residential) programs, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), detox, medication-assisted treatments, opioid treatment programs, mental health services, and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs or day programs). TRICARE covers addiction treatment and mental health services that are medically necessary and proven to work. It is important to communicate with your treatment team to ensure all aspects of your planned course of treatment at Spirit Mountain Recovery fall under the definition of proven treatments.
Understand TRICARE
TriCare insurance coverage is available worldwide; however, plans are managed in three separate regions to make interactions with providers easier. There are two regions in the United States and a third that encompasses all regions outside the United States. Each region has its own regional contractor.
TriCare East or the east region includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and all states to the east. The TriCare West or the western region consists of all states to the west of those listed above. The regional partners affiliated with each region help provide care and access to care for TriCare members in the area.
Welcome To Spirit Mountain Recovery
Understanding your TriCare addiction treatment options
Your drug and alcohol rehab coverage through TriCare will vary depending on your specific plan and its benefits. Like other insurance companies, each plan and level within that plan offer different levels and amounts of coverage.
TriCare provides coverage for most levels of care found in addiction treatment programs. It is important to note that some levels of care, such as inpatient residential treatment, may require prior authorization from your TriCare program administrator. It is also important to look at your policy exclusions to see if TriCare policies do not cover specific treatments or interventions. For example, many alternative therapies and some traditional therapy practices offered at TriCare-covered rehab facilities may be available at the facility but not covered by your plan. Choosing to use these treatments as part of your addiction treatment plan may result in a greater out-of-pocket cost to you.
To overcome addiction, each person who comes to Spirit Mountain Recovery has unique needs. Unfortunately, addiction is not an illness with a single, effective treatment. The therapeutic interventions that work well for one person may be entirely ineffective for someone else. The best length of treatment for you will vary based on your treatment needs and goals. It is crucial to consider what you need from treatment and work with your treatment team to determine the right duration of your program. TriCare policies provide coverage for all levels of care available at Spirit Mountain Recovery with varying deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses.
Unfortunately, there is no singular answer to how long TRICARE will pay for drug and alcohol rehab. The length of treatment they will cover will depend on your specific plan and the level of care within that plan. It may also vary depending on your region (east, west or international) and whether the program you choose is a TriCare authorized provider. Your regional TriCare representative can help you understand your coverage levels for your specific plan. It is essential to research your plan and your chosen rehab before beginning treatment to ensure each element of your care is covered by your policy. Also, one of our admissions team members can work with you and your First Health representative to help you better understand what levels of care and treatment services your insurance policy will cover at Spirit Mountain Recovery.

Sumner Adams2025-03-12Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Spirit Mountain Recovery has brought joy and gratitude back into my life. I had been to seven treatment centers over the last twelve years prior to coming to SMR. It was explained to me before arriving that their style of programming is a little different than my experience in the past. It is not just a traditional 12-step program. They put in emphasis on experiential therapy that allows clients to get out in the beautiful Utah wilderness every week instead of sitting at the house day in and day out. This aspect of the program has allowed me to rediscover my passion for the outdoors and reignite the fire I had lost for hobbies such as hiking, snowboarding, pickle ball, going to the gym etc. They also give us the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the local recovery community through going to meetings throughout the week. The staff made the experience for me during my four months I was there. Each staff member from the lowest level position all the up to the owner made themselves available at anytime when needed. It was clear that they all truly cared about each client and came always from a place of compassion and love. The staff to client relationships was unlike anything I’ve experience before in past treatment centers. Most of the staff are in recovery and majority of them are alumni of SMR, so being able to relate to them on a personal level came very easy. Honest recovery work requires a lot of vulnerability and the staff provides a very safe place for this to happen. They have been in the exact spot the clients are in during their recovery journeys so they fully understand the pain and sadness we feel in early sobriety. Lastly, SMR is not done with you when you leave the center. Between the monthly alumni meetings and calls from the staff to check-in, they really want to remain involved within our recovery journeys which allows those important relationships that were built to continue on. This is just another part of the program that separates them from others. There will always be a special place in my heart for Spirit Mountain. I am forever grateful to this program and the people I met as a result. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse, I highly recommend Spirit Mountain. You will be shown love, acceptance and compassion and will have the opportunity to build a foundation of recovery that can bring a life of peace and serenity that we loose when we are stuck in the pit of substance abuse. I wish I had found Spirit Mountain back in 2013 but am so glad I found it when I did. It changed my life and continues to better my life each and everyday. D J2024-09-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It would be dramatic to say that Spirit Mountain Recovery saved my life, BUT they did provide the compass and leadership that lead me along the path to self discovery and healing I so desperately needed to actually begin living life. The staff are almost entirely in recovery themselves or have worked in that field for many years, and most of those in recovery (all but one FT staff member) went through Spirit Mountain. As such, they were not only qualified to light the way but have also lived the journey firsthand and so were able to easily see the pitfalls and challenges that inevitably present themselves and demonstrated daily how to navigate them effectively. All of the activities were ultimately based on learning to live a satisfying life of recovery--living with purpose and joy through connection, willing honesty, and discomfort (where growth happens) without the need for substances to alter what I am truly feeling and thinking in the moment. Being active is an important aspect of the experience at Spirit Mountain, and for me that was hugely beneficial because my additions sucked all of the pleasures of life from me, I no longer desired to do anything but feed the beast. I highly recommend considering Spirit Mountain Recovery if you desire to find out once again, or possibly for the first time, what life can and should be lived like. Shawn Toney2024-09-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I don’t normally write reviews but on this occasion it was necessary. I want to say thank you to all the staff at S.M.R. For helping me with a life long struggle of addiction. I honestly thought I was a lost cause and that my life was set in stone with addiction. I was wrong in that thinking and with the help and guidance of the staff I can now say that my whole outlook on life has changed. They opened up my eyes into seeing what life is really about and how to deal with tough life decision in a healthy way instead of self sabotage. It doesn’t just stop after you leave the house either they remain in contact with me and are always willing to talk and help out with whatever you have going on in life. I consider some of them my closest friends to this day and will never forget what they have given me and my family. Jobey Shaver2024-05-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It is really hard to put into words what Spirit Mountain Recovery has done for me, and my family. I went to SMR a very broken and hopeless individual with no chance of happiness. It didn't take long to realize that the staff actually cared about me, which was hard to comprehend since I didn't care about myself. Although I had no understanding of the process and treatment they were providing I buckled down, did what was asked and embraced the uncomfortable. The results are amazing. I am the happiest I have ever been and my family is too! Thank you SMR for showing me how to get out of my own way. I am now the husband and father I always wanted to be. Nate Harper2024-04-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot share enough good words about SMR. At the darkest time of my life, I desperately seeked for a family that would help me in my healing journey. SMR embodies love, compassion, and a deep understanding of human life and suffering. The staff at SMR are beyond amazing, and the program is designed with the client in mind. If you’re not sober and want to be, SMR will help take you there, without a doubt Jaiden Snyder2024-04-27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
